SYMBIO was among the highlights of the international workshop “Lombardy excellence in sustainable innovation ecosystems,” held on 11 October 2025 at the Italy Pavilion of Expo Osaka 2025. The event, promoted by the Lombardy Region – DG for Universities, Research and Innovation, together with the Lombardy Green Chemistry Association (LGCA), brought together high-level stakeholders to discuss the green transition and decarbonization, showcasing concrete collaborations among research, industry, and public bodies.
The workshop featured four thematic panels on advanced manufacturing, recycling and remanufacturing, green chemistry, and health and well-being systems.
SYMBIO was presented within Panel 3, dedicated to industrial symbiosis for the circular economy, with contributions from the LGCA and Italbiotec Srl. The session illustrated how industrial symbiosis models could close production loops, valorise agroforestry by-products, and enable new, sustainable, bio-based value chains.
A special focus was placed on VCG.AI – Value Chain Generator, the AI tool developed within SYMBIO. The platform supported the strategic design of circular value chains through a data-driven, predictive approach, combining information on resources, technologies, and markets to identify actionable industrial synergies and new bio-based business opportunities.
Presenting VCG.AI at Expo Osaka marked an important step for the project’s international positioning and opened avenues for collaboration with Japanese stakeholders active in the circular economy and sustainable chemistry.
The event featured an exhibition area showcasing prototypes and solutions from the projects, fostering technical networking among companies, researchers, and policymakers. For SYMBIO, Expo Osaka was a key opportunity to raise visibility and accelerate the development of new bio-based value chains through EU–Japan cooperation.
